diagnostic tool for older bmw

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and will get to grips with the layout soon. Sorry if this is in the wrong section. As the title suggests, I need a hand held engine diagnostic tool for a 1995 bmw 316i. Most on ebay/amazon etc are for 1996 onwards and was wandering will these work on my car?. I have a rough idle problem, but will post for advise in the relevent section. Any help appreciated.
